A short post tonight because I just can’t seem to find that much information about Shiwa Rashtian online, though I do love her creations. Her design studio is located in Utrecht, Netherlands and her pieces are largely functional. She is a graduate from the School of the Arts Utrecht as well with a degree in product design.
The above is called paper vase and relies on the strength of the rolled paper to create the vessels. It reminds me of a monochromatic Amy Genser.
These above are a really crazy story and idea. They’re called the eggpot and they’re made of crushed up egg shells. Who knew, but apparently 3 billion eggs are eaten each year in the Netherlands and they go to waste. Turns out though, they’re a great source of calcium and other nutrients so when converted into flower pots they are great for the plants. I have no idea how she makes these but they’re awesome – and so thin.
Cocoon Rug, above, looks like my yurt prototype with colored wool. Shiwa claims it will change over time as it gets worn out – I imagine that’s somewhat true, it will become more compact…and forget it if it gets wet…it’ll become a pancake! I like the idea of creating pieces knowing they’re going to change / disappear over time.
